big boy bed

>> Monday, December 19, 2011

Quite suddenly at the beginning of November, we decided (or rather my husband decided) to convent Andrew's crib to a toddler bed (i.e., take the front rails off the crib). I was afraid of what that would mean for his sleep. Even though I knew he was used to napping on a cot at daycare, I worried that he would be so distracted by his new-found freedom at home that he would never sleep again!

Well, he did miss a few naps in the first week, but soon enough he adjusted, as he always does. It takes longer for him to fall asleep these days, but the only major difference is that he insists on keeping his door open while he sleeps.

Another change is that I no longer rock him before bed, but we have developed new rituals. Instead of rocking him while I sing "You Are My Sunshine" and "Powder Blue," I now sit on the floor next to his bed, stroking his hair and nuzzling his head while we sing "Twinkle Twinkle Little Star" and the ABCs together.

Just one more step towards official "big boy" status. Next challenge: potty training!
